Pete Peterson was one of the great patriots and philanthropists of our time, and he was a great friend whom I deeply admired. He knew his extraordinary life story was only possible in America, and of his many achievements, he was proudest of the work he did to ensure that future generations have the same chance to pursue the American Dream that he did. He brought people of different backgrounds together to tackle some of the toughest challenges facing our country, and he was often a lonely voice for fiscal responsibility, when others were kicking the can down the road. As a civic-oriented philanthropist, he was as tireless as he was generous, and he made an enormous difference. His legacy will continue to be felt for many years to come through his foundation, which is led by his son, Michael, and his wife, Joan. My thoughts are with them and the entire Peterson family.
